Security: Browsers: Mozilla Firefox and the No Script plug-in

SecurityWell, I guess that after even Google has been compromised by staff members having used Internet Explorer it is time to consider that Internet Explorer is a security hole. It is unfortunate, but it appears that the best alternate browser is the safe and secure Mozilla Firefox. And, since one can never be certain of the content on  a given web page, we recommend the use of the "NoScript" plugin. To wit:

NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox, Flock, Seamonkey and other mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source add-on allows JavaScript, Java and Flash and other plugins to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank).

NoScript requires users to explicitly permit scripts and other dangerous code. This prevents people from stumbling onto a site and derailing themselves.

Better still, look up each site at siteadvisor.com, McAfee's online site certification tool. The easiest way to do this is to type "site:siteadvisor.com nameofsite.com" in the Google search engine.

Browse safely.

 Security: Wireless Encryption

SecurityToo many end users of wireless technology are leaving their wireless connections needlessly vulnerable to outside use and possible data theft. An open connection represents an unnecessary risk to network security and increases the likelihood that you will not be able to use the network bandwidth you have paid for to do vital work. We recommend the use of a device with WPA or WPA2 encryption (supported by almost all 802.11g devices). Even if you are using earlier hardware, we recommend the use of a WEP encryption key at a minimum. Additionally, networks can mask their SSID (the broadcast ID you may have seen on your laptop). For the most secure applications, we recommend MAC access control, which gives a network administrator the right to accept or reject devices according to the specific hardware ID of the wireless interface of a device, such as a laptop. If you find this complicated, we can implement a turn-key solution for you.

Security: Where to Go and what to Do...

SecurityAs important as the software you run as antivirus or what kind of firewall you may use is the orientation your staff receives. Keep them safe. Allow us to inform them about the software that protects them and how to know if it is working. Let us show them the ways that any security can be compromised (such as booting the the computer with bootable media in a drive or downloading and installing an unknown executable file). Our firm belief is that work computers are for work, not for peer to peer file swapping or gaming, or other activities that may be hazardous. Let us inform them about packet sniffers and meta file data, two of many ways security and privacy may be breached.

Security: Use a Firewall at Home and at Work!

SecurityMany people are unaware that one of the best ways to protect your PC and your data is to use a physical harware-based firewall gateway. These devices, from the more robust ones manufactured by SonicWall, Secure Computing, or Barracuda, to the more mundane and less fully-featured devices provided by Linksys or D-link, are the best way to keep the bad guys out. We recommend them at home or at work. There are many affordable options which will more than repay your investment. Some offer website filtering, spam filtering, and allow you to set employee access times.
